BA (Hons) Contemporary Fine Art
Sally Burch graduated from Central St Martins, London with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Fine Art after initially studying Graphic Design at Brighton School of Art. She combines the skills from her graphic roots stirring the paint pot with ever evolving ideas from her fine art education.
‘ I would like to call myself a ‘Collector of Colour’. Grouping colours of an experience, or memory linked usually to a specific time or location. When you introduce colour and form onto an anonymous surface (in my case, a wooden panel), it will immediately set up a relationship with that space. The more colour additions, the more dynamic. The key is in the balancing act, and the control of the energy contained in each colour, to make the piece succeed’.
She is inspired by the colour theorist, Johannes Itten and the ideas of the Bauhaus (the foundation of simplicity by creating aesthetic value through vibrant and contrasting colour). The founder of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, famously said; ‘colourful is my favourite colour’ it could also be Sally’s resounding mantra.
“Beauty lies not in the real world but in geometry.”
Sally’s practice includes drawing, collage, photography and silk-screen printing.
The abstract paintings often start as sketches, photographs or mini free-form painterly sketches.
